You can 'jab and point' to turn in snow without engaging the ABS... Done it for over 7 Canadian winters in 3 different ABS equipped Z's. Sharp brake jab and release with a second one as you are cutting the wheel will allow you to make a sudden evasive manouver. No accidents in all that time of daily commuting in the Z, but some pucker moments, for sure.
For stopping on icy streets and slicked out intersection approaches, the ABS is essential... This from an old timer who grew up on non-ABS vehicles.
What doesn't work in heavy snow driving is traction control. If you have to accelerate through an unplowed mushy intersection, make damn sure the VDC or equivalent system is turned off, or you will clunk to a stop in the middle of it. Fine for taking off at an icy spot, crap for powering through heavy snow.
